Kartalkaya; Skiing in Turkey

I have a whole heap of renewed respect for my Ma and Pa (especially Dad since he is a snowboarder) skiing with two little kids back in the day. I’ve spent the past week playing mother duckling to the girls on the ski fields. T-bars, chairlifts, ski poles and snowploughs suddenly became a whole new challenge. (Three days of skiing on my own and no aches and pains, one hour of snowploughs with the girls and I’ve discovered leg muscles I didn’t know existed.) The girls had two weeks off for school holidays and for the second half we drove 3 hours East from Istanbul to Kartalkaya, Bolu. I couldn’t quite believe there would be a ski field, let alone snow to ski on as we were driving. 18 degrees, and not a mountain to be seen – even after parking the car at the bottom and jumping into a prebooked hotel car to drive us up. But suddenly, out of nowhere, appeared a whole heap of snow in a valley and a fairly impressive ski resort.

We stayed in the Grand Kartal Hotel, a large all-inclusive that provided ski passes, three meals a day and all the sahlep, hot chocolate and mulled wine one might want. There was a warm swimming pool to kick around in after a long day’s skiing, and a sauna, spa and hamam which we didn’t take advantage of.

The slopes themselves were similar to NZ skiing. Nothing too difficult, but great for the girls as beginners. The first few days were very windy and I spent my time on the slopes closest to the hotel while the girls had lessons. The third day the wind dropped and I headed over the top to the other side of the mountain where a grand total of six skiiers and boarders had carved into the piste. It was pretty weird standing on the side of a sunny mountain at 12pm with only a couple of tracks in front of me, and not a sound to be heard. I think all in all there would’ve been about 300 people on the entire mountain skiing, and not many of them left the t-bar on the blue slope or the main chair lift. The other side had potential for some awesome off-piste skiing but it was pretty icy (and whipped up into lovely meringue peaks) and since I didn’t have a helmet, and there was absolutely no one around I decided to take it easy.

The weather was pretty good, very windy for 4/5 days, but one day when the wind dropped and the sun was shining was absolutely fantastic. The Sunday was the busiest day of the week, I read somewhere that because of the proximity to Ankara and Istanbul many people come for the day, plus there are buses arranged by travel agencies the drop off early morning and return in the evening.

I have no idea of the costs involved, but I imagine its pricier than skiing in NZ. The hotels (Grand Kartal and Kartal) are all inclusive and supply the lift passes. I couldn’t work it out but there is actually a whole other side to the mountain with some good-looking pistes, which I think were all attached to an newer, fancier hotel directly opposite the Kartals. (Called Kayak World or something similar. Kayak means Ski in Turkish, how confusing.)

I think this was only my second time ever skiing without my family, I missed my folks a bit! There weren’t too many people my age staying at the resort – I think mainly because it’s pretty family orientated and there isn’t much of a apres-ski scene. I think there are a few other resorts around Turkey more well known but much busier.

SNOW DAY!

Katie came over for dinner last night, bringing with her a heavy snowfall that covered Hampstead within a few hours. So of COURSE we had to go play.

I set up the camera to take a photo of us (on my new Christmas tripod – thanks mum and dad!) but hadn’t gotten round to installing the remote control software for it so Katie and I starjumped ourselves into giggles trying to get the timing right for a photo. If I was more patient I’d make a .gif but I’m not today so here are all the photos in a line :D

And then of course I got up nice and early this morning to take Alfie out – he went absolutely insane with excitement! My new favourite game is to throw snowballs at him and watch his confusion at the ‘balls’ disappearance when he catches them in his mouth.

If you click on the last photo you can see a mad man in his speedos climbing out of the pond where he’d been swimming. In the background you can see the pond frozen over.

Lots and lots of snow

IMG_4206 IMG_4205

I guess you all know how lovely the weather has been here lately. NOT. Well, kinda actually. It snowed about 10cm and everywhere is blanketed (and I’m in zone 2 – almost central London!) The snow makes London lovely, quiet, and friendly. I went for a walk and people smiled and said hello, cars got stuck in the road and pedestrians helped get them going again (Lots and lots and lots of stuck cars – the car in the photo above is stuck too.) There were snowmen everywhere, and kids in the council flats across the road pelting each other in snowballs (and unlucky passers-by like me.) The tube stations in our area were shut so I didn’t make it into town to meet Kit’s sister, but Jenny and I still got to the movies by walking to Finchley road. We saw The American, with George Clooney, which was quite good (like a little Italian film, but with George). We had Pizza Express for dinner (which was not as good as I remember) and Ben and Jerry’s for dessert (which was SUBLIME, but sickly).

LOOK A FOX!!

Jenny spotted is while I was taking photos so I turned around and got about six shots of him. Not a scaredy-fox at all! We saw another one in the cemetery from the window at home as well. They have creepy glowing eyes.

There is an outdoor gym in Kilburn Park which was quite fun but slippery to play on in the snow! And here is a lovely picture of Jenny all wrapped up against the icy weather.

Stay warm everybody! (And slip, slop, slap and wrap antipodeans!) x

It’s been snowing again today

So I went to take a walk around the cemetery. The sun is starting to set now (3pm) which is slightly depressing, but it looks very pretty with the rays of sunshine over the gravestones.

I was hoping to go to the Tate Modern tonight, but I’ve overbooked myself for the entire weekend so I might have to do some shuffling. I’m meeting the sister of a dear friend tomorrow, and then Cally, and going to Brick Lane with Jenny, and I need to do Christmas shopping (and work out what I’m doing for Christmas), and then I’m catching up with some old school friends from Swindon too!

I’m also waiting on a job that I’ve been in the process of applying for. I went to their Christmas function on Wednesday night and met them all, nice bunch, a little start up company with great atmosphere, so fingers crossed. I can’t wait to start working, I’m a bit stir crazy – no friends during the week and little motivation to tackle the great outdoors! (Plus limited funds.. but I’m making a grand plan for next Monday about how I’m going to tackle or the free London exhibits!) I’ve done lots of baking though! I guess December is not the greatest time to come to the UK alone!

Ice skating and santas

IMG_4058

Last night we went ice skating at the Natural History Museum in Kensington which was SO PRETTY. But also insanely busy. Jenny likened it to walking down Oxford Street in ice skates.

And then today I went and met up with dear Katie O’Brien, a childhood friend who has grown to be much taller than I. It was lovely seeing her! I met her at Covent Garden, which was completely packed, and madness. I suddenly realised where all of my London memories are from having been to Covent Garden today! We visited the Dr Marten shop which is one of the most distinct places in my mind (the Doc Martens aren’t as cool as I remember though), and I tried to take lots of photos, but I had my new lense in, which I’ve discovered isn’t very good at taking photos of distances. I will get there though!

IMG_4119 IMG_4123IMG_4124 IMG_4128IMG_4127 IMG_4132

Then we wandered down Fleet Street to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery (I saw paintings by Van Gogh, and Seurat’s, and Rembrandts, Da Vinci’s, dozens of paintings we studied at school!! I’m definitely going back when it’s quieter…. and it’s free!)

BUT! As we approached Trafalgar Square we started seeing a few Santas about the place. And then!!

A Santa Flash mob. YAY!
