In happier helpful news!

I’m going to Pohkara tomorrow!

And, I have a project for when I get back. There is a spare room here that I would like to convert into a library/reading room for the girls. If any one feels like donating a few dollars, it would be greatly appreciated. I need to buy carpet, cushions, a low table, shelving and BOOKS. Books are so cheap here that even a few dollars will buy one or two children’s books, and the kids will have somewhere to do their homework and chill out.

I set up a paypal account to make it easy, I put a donate button to the left. You guys are awesome, and contributing to a worthwhile cause! Promise!

  1. Hi Alex,
trev told me about your blog today!! just had a great few mins reading about your experiences whilst bored on a nightshift!
very jealous to see you at all those amazing places....i think i might have to make a trip back soon!
i absolutely agree with your frustrations about the culture/customs of Nepal concerning women and the caste system: they have some serious issues that are gonna take years to solve! don't beat yourself up about it though.....in just being there and telling other people about it, you are helping!
please send my love to Gopal and Eli, and of course all the children!! please tell the older ones who we've known for years (Rajan, Ester, Lachu and Sulochana.....um, can't remeber who else is still living there....but if i've missed any, tell them too!!) that i am thinking about them and hope they are all well.
it can be quite isolating at the orphanage...don't feel guilty about renting a room in town for a few nights of beers with backpackers to get away from it all, and if you are looking for ideas for things to do, i would reccomend a trek if you can fit it in. white-water rafting is a possibility too, and a visit to chitwan jungle is a must!! let me know if you need any contacts or any further info.
a few small things you must do: a visit to patan durbar square (with a cup of massala tea in the museum restaurant garden) and a visit to 'Babar Mahal revisited'(shopping and restaurant in thapathali - just after you cross the bridge in kathmandu when heading from the orphonage to thamel).
    better go...patients to see!
i'll continue to read the blog...give me an email if you need any further info!
